Project Details
The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries (MEMC) launched the Burkina Faso National AMP Project (PN_AMP) on 16 February 2023 as part of the Africa Minigrids Program (AMP), a broad technical assistance initiative being implemented across 21 African countries with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project's overall objective is to support access to clean energy by increasing the financial viability of, and promoting large-scale commercial investment in, solar photovoltaic minigrids in Burkina Faso. More specifically, the PN_AMP aims to: (i) increase access to electricity in off-grid communities by promoting the use of solar photovoltaic minigrids with battery storage; (ii) support increased private investment through the deployment of innovative business models and financing mechanisms; and (iii) strengthen the comparative advantages of off-grid systems by establishing a national dialogue on implementation models, promoting and disseminating pilot projects on productive uses of energy, and advancing digital innovation in the off-grid sector.
It also supports government efforts and strengthens the resilience of vulnerable communities by supporting their livelihoods and income-generating activities.
Implementing partners: The PN_AMP is implemented by Agence Faso Vêenem (formerly the Agence Burkinabè de l'Électrification Rurale (ABER) and the Agence Nationale des Énergies Renouvelables et de l'Efficacité Énergétique (ANEREE)), in collaboration with the Directorate General of Energy (DGE) at the national level and with support from the regional AMP programme.
Expected results:
• Access to clean energy for more than 5,564 rural households and businesses
• Deployment or strengthening of 9 green minigrids (more than 400 kWp of cumulative installed capacity)
• Reduction of more than 14,500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions
• Creation of more than 400 primary productive jobs
• Development of a national rural electrification strategy and a standard minigrid delivery model
The project is expected to make a significant contribution to accelerating rural electrification in the country by providing a competitive solution for electrifying areas that are not connected to the national electricity grid.
